Philosophy Programmes on TV and Radio

There are some fantastic programmes on BBC 4 and Radio 4 at the moment that all P4Cers should know about:

'Justice' is a series of lectures by Michael Sandel, a political philosopher at Harvard. He has a great participatory style of lecturing and the series has been made in partnership with the Open University, so there are lots of supporting materials on the OU website, too.

On Radio 4 (Sunday afternoons) there is 'In Doubt We Trust'  where Mark Vernon discusses the 'art of doubting' with philosophers and scientists. A great discussion on Socrates and Socratic questioning last Sunday. When training teachers in P4C the issue of whether introducing children to doubt is a good idea often arises. This programme has certainly opened my mind to different ways of looking at uncertainty and doubt. I'd love to know what you think!

They're on iPlayer at the moment, so catch them while you can!

  1. Thanks Angela; these are really interesting programmes. What I really like about Sandel is the obvious enjoyment he and his students have in working through the knotty topics they are discussing. Hardly surprising then that his lectures are regularly the most popular and oversubscribed.

Another rewarding listen is "In Our Time" which has just celebrated its 500th edition. There are lots of programmes exploring aspects of philosophy which can be downloaded from the massive IOT archive on the Radio 4 website.

  2. The Moral Maze could be useful too. Isn't Radio 4 great?

  3. Yes, Radio 4 is outstanding on so many fronts. But Moral Maze often seems to fail as an examination of ethical dilemmas because of the poor model of debate its contributors provide. It is more a "PM's Questions" on occasion than a community of enquiry. Our Y6 P4C -ers behave better.
