Hello,

A big thank you to everyone who came to the Wiser Wales network meeting at Ogmore Comprehensive last week. I hope that face-to-face network meetings will continue to be well attended. I know there were many people who wanted to come along, but who were unable to do so due to other commitments - I hope you'll be able to come next time. We are in the process of arranging the next meeting, so watch this space!

This blog is intended to support our network and help it to grow by giving everyone a convenient online forum for discussion, so let's get going!

  10. Angela, Just to say how much I enjoyed the Level 1 course in Trinity College the other week. I've held my first 2 enquiries with a Y8 class now and was really impressed with how quickly the children agreed and monitored their own rules and with the quality of questions that they arrived at :) Stimuli and most popular questions were: a) Japanese woodcut and " Do artists tend to draw from their experience or their imagination?" and the following day ( after wwwebi) b) "The Professor and the Ferryman" from the Sapere book and " What would it be like to live in a world without knowledge?" This latter question was especially fruitful, leading to discussions about the nature of knowledge and its acquisition, whether knowledge per se could be good or evil, and relative values of different kinds of knowledge!

  12. In response to Jason's comment on 22 March:
I am really glad that you enjoyed the course and that you've managed to get going with P4C so soon. I am impressed that you used such an unusual stimulus - a Japanese woodcut - for an early enquiry. Your classes are coming up with fabulous questions already. Did you do a session specifically around questioning? It's also great that you've used the SAPERE Handbook for a stimulus. The Handbook is an amazing resource and point of reference to keep at your side.
With regards to what you said about your pupils' response to establishing/monitoring rules, when I first started doing P4C I was always amazed by how responsible children are in this respect. It does seem like a huge leap of faith - handing so much responsibility over to the pupils - but, from my own experience and from what teachers say, it really does work well. Keep blogging and let us know how it's going!
